Big Within Small

Individual pieces creating a whole greater than its parts. Quilt made by my mother

Individual pieces creating a whole greater than its parts. Quilt made by my mother

As above, so below; as within, so without.

I refer to this phrase frequently as a way of reminding myself of my place within the Universe.

Through it, I find a sense of belonging, knowing that all of who and what I am is connected to everything else, both microscopic and macroscopic.

Cellular biologist, Dr Bruce Lipton in his book, “The Biology of Belief” discusses the extensive work he has done in studying the trillions of individual cells which work together to create a human being.

There is not one 'new' function of the human body that is not already expressed in the single cell.

“There is not one ‘new’ function of the human body that is not already expressed in the single cell.” ~ Bruce Lipton, PhD

His decades of research have led him to conclude that I am not so much a single human being as over 50 trillion cells specialising, cooperating, and working together in a multi-cellular community called “me”.

As an individual I am part of many different communities.

Family Community – My parents, siblings, children.

Extended Family Community – My grandparents, in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins

Tribal Community – used here not so much to designate membership in an indigenous culture group, but to show groups that I have a close connection to who are not blood relatives. This could include groups in which we share a common religious or spiritual practice, or groups where we share a particular hobby or activity. Once upon a time, this would only indicate people sharing a common activity within close vicinity to each other, but with the emergence of social media and the internet this has become more global.

Neighbourhood Community – The people who live in the same area as I do. Again, life has changed drastically in the past 30 years with the internet and I may or may not know all of these people.

And up from there into regional, national, and global communities. Mother, Pagan, Healer, American-English, European, Human Being, Planet Earth.

At each level my role can change, becoming more specialised in some areas, and less important in others. My awareness of and interactions with other individual persons can also decrease as the numbers grow larger and our roles more specialised. I don’t often come in contact with the people responsible for making sure electricity and gas continue to move into my house as as example, but there is no denying how important it is to me that they do their jobs.

We can extend this out beyond our own globe. Scientists are now reasonably certain that the building blocks of amino acids which made it possible for life to exist on plant Earth originated from meteorites or some other body from outer space from Outer Space which collided with the Earth billions of years ago.

From (space) dust we come, and to (space) dust we will return.

I believe that these connections exist on more than a physical level though. I believe these connections are also on an energetic level.

“The Universe is one indivisible, dynamic whole in which energy and matter are so deeply entangled it is impossible to consider them as independent elements.” ~ Dr Bruce Lipton

Compare this statement to the work of nursing theorist, Martha E Rogers, PhD.:

Major Concepts in Rogerian Theory

  • Energy Field constitutes the fundamental unit of the living and the inanimate. The energy field is infinite. Rogers discusses two in particular. The first is the human field. Human beings do not have an energy field but rather they are energy fields. The environment is also an energy field. Neither field can be reduced any further.
  • Universe of Open System indicates energy fields are infinite and continuously open. The human and environmental systems are integrated with each other.
  • Pattern identifies the energy field. Is distinguishing and characteristic of a field and is perceived as a single wave. The pattern changes continuously and innovatively. Each human pattern is unique and is integrated with its own unique environmental field. The evolution of the unitary human being is a dynamic, irreducible, non-linear process characterized by increasing diversity of energy field patterning.

As Energy Fields we are connected to every other Energy Field. It is the collective WHOLE of this Energy that forms the Universe. When I do magic or healing work I am accessing this whole. The attunements I received as a Reiki Master-Teacher and the training I have had in shamanic healing provide a means in which I can access this wholeness more easily.

These, of course, are not the only means in which one can learn to access this Universal Energy. I have met many natural energy healers, and incredibly powerful witches who are able to access this Energy without the training I have had.

I am an individual, with a unique human pattern, formed by the genetic blueprint I inherited from my ancestors and the environmental fields which caused certain parts of that blueprint to activate. I am also connected, energetically, to every other energy field, both living and environmental. My energy is part of the whole and the whole is part of me.
